Terminology

The words these docs use, and what each one precisely means in Tabern.

These terms appear across every guide. When a term matters, the docs use exactly these words so behavior stays unambiguous.

Venue and location

  • Venue — your business on Tabern: one website, one subdomain, one menu set, one rewards program, one subscription. A venue can be a restaurant, bar, or similar business.
  • Location — a physical address belonging to a venue. One venue can have several locations; each has its own address, contact details, and weekly hours.
  • Subdomain — the yourvenue in yourvenue.tabern.app. Each venue gets one; see Subdomains & URLs.

Content

  • Menu — a named list (Dinner, Brunch, Drinks). A venue can run several; guests switch between them.
  • Section — a group inside a menu (Starters, Mains).
  • Item — a dish or drink with a name, price, optional description, photo, and dietary tags.
  • Variation — a priced size or preparation of an item (Small/Large, Glass/Bottle).
  • Deal — a promotion with an image, discount type/value, and a schedule. Shown on your public site when active and published.

Publishing

  • Draft — your working copy. Every edit lands here. Guests never see drafts.
  • Publish — the act of snapshotting your content and putting it live on your subdomain.
  • Published snapshot — the immutable version of your site guests see. Publishing again replaces it; drafting never touches it.
  • Unpublish — take the snapshot offline. Drafts remain.

People

  • Account owner — the single Tabern account that owns a venue and controls its dashboard, billing, and data. No venue has two owners today.
  • Guest — anyone browsing your public site.
  • Member — a guest who joined your rewards program with their email. Members are scoped to your venue — one email can be a member of several venues' programs independently.
  • Member code — the member's 8-character code shown in their QR, used for check-ins.
  • Staff — people working your venue. Staff never log in to the dashboard; they use the kiosk screens. See Scanner operation.

Rewards

  • Rewards program — the visit-based punch card configured per venue. One per venue.
  • Check-in — one approved visit stamp, recorded at a scanner kiosk.
  • Milestone — a visit count at which a reward unlocks (e.g., visit 5).
  • Reward — what a member earns at a milestone: percent off, a fixed amount, or a menu item.
  • Grant — a specific earned reward a member holds until it's redeemed.

Kiosks

  • Rewards Scanner — a PIN-unlocked staff screen for member check-ins.
  • Menu display — a public, read-only screen rotating your published menu.

Account

  • Subscription — the Stripe billing for one venue. Each venue has its own.
  • Billing portal — Stripe's self-serve page for payment methods, invoices, and cancellation.
  • Referral — a signup attributed to your referral link; earns credit when it converts to a paid subscription.
