Wallet passes

Give members a branded rewards pass for Apple Wallet or Google Wallet that updates on its own after every check-in.

Every rewards member can carry their card in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. The pass holds their member QR code and visit progress, and it updates by itself, so members don’t need to open your site at the counter.

What members get

After signing in on your site’s Rewards page, members see two buttons under their card:

  • Add to Apple Wallet downloads the pass for Apple Wallet.
  • Add to Google Wallet saves the pass to Google Wallet. It appears only when Google Wallet is available.

The Apple Wallet pass shows the pass title and logo, the member’s visits (for example “3 of 10”), your venue name, the next reward, and the QR code with the member code underneath. The back of the pass lists the latest update, your terms, and the member’s email and code. The Google Wallet pass shows the visit count, QR code, and member code.

Design the pass

Open Customers → Rewards and expand the Wallet pass section. It appears once you’ve created your rewards card. Switch the live preview to Wallet pass to see your changes as you go.

  1. Pass title: up to 12 characters, such as a short venue name. Leave it blank to use your card title.

  2. Pass colors: pick a preset, or set custom Background, Text, and Labels colors.

  3. If a low-contrast warning appears, adjust the colors. Guests may struggle to read text that blends into the background.

  4. Pass logo: a small mark beside the pass title, scaled to fit 64 × 40.

  5. Strip image: the wide banner behind the visit count, 375 × 123.

  6. Notification icon: a square icon shown in Wallet notifications.

  7. Terms on back of pass: optional, up to 2,000 characters.

  8. Click Publish in the page header. Installed passes pick up the new design.

How passes stay up to date

Members never need to re-add their pass. Tabern updates it for them:

  • Member activity: an approved check-in, a visit you add or undo, or a change you make to the member updates their pass right away. On iPhone the member also gets a “Your rewards card was updated” notification.
  • Program changes: when you publish, pause, or resume your rewards card, every installed pass updates quietly, without a notification.
  • While your program is paused, or a member is paused or unsubscribed, their Apple Wallet pass shows the rewards as unavailable.

Location reminders

Both wallets can bring the pass up when a member is near your venue: Location alerts for Apple Wallet and Nearby notifications for Google Wallet. Turn them on in Notifications.

Each location needs a latitude and longitude, which you type in yourself under Hours & Location. Tabern doesn’t look up coordinates from your address.

Send messages to members

You can send your own short message to members with an Apple Wallet pass, one at a time or in bulk. Google Wallet doesn’t support custom messages. See Notifications.

Scanning Wallet passes

The QR code on a Wallet pass is the same code as on the member’s web card. Your Rewards Scanner reads either one, and staff can type the member code by hand if a scan fails.
